HAPPY HOUR SERIES: DARK AND STORMY

Aptly titled, Dark and Stormy depicts a clouded scene of grays and blacks through which an obscured photograph of a house’s facade peeks through. Hovnanian overlaid the canvas with the phrase “Mother said ‘Wake Up Jane, wake up Dick, come for a ride with me.” The phrase, taken from the classic book series Dick and Jane, alludes to her own childhood when her mother would take her and her brothers out of the house when Hovnanian’s father would come home drunk.
