MIND THE BODY- An Artistic Reflection on Power, Identity, Feminism and Hierarchy
Mind the Body is the installation by Rachel Lee Hovnanian in which her message of analysis on the media and communication continues. A sculptural installation in chromed metal made up of ten replicas. Absent bodies, expected and alluded to by the "cases", costumes that define a body, in the stereotypical parameters imposed by mass society, by the dynamics of the mass media and by the strategies of communication, complementary to fashion design, of fashion.
Body Armor II (Polished)-(The General: A Polished cast aluminum strapped bathing suit of Body Armor) At the center of this composition stands a commanding presence—the General. Crafted from polished cast aluminum, this six-foot-tall strapped bathing suit embodies authority and dominance. Its reflective surface and formidable straps signify a polished and pristine exterior, symbolizing a calculated and perfected projection of gender power. The General's placement in the ensemble suggests its pivotal role in this hierarchical arrangement.
Body Armor II (Matte)-(The Soldiers: Strapless matte finish cast aluminum bathing suits of Body Armor) Standing in formation before the General are seven matte-finish cast aluminum bathing suits representing Body Armor, each measuring six feet in height. These strapless sculptures represent the soldiers, molded in a manner that distinguishes them from the General. The matte-finish creates a contrasting texture, signaling the soldiers' position as subordinates. Their lack of polish suggests a rawness and authenticity that contrasts with the General's polished exterior.
